4 Reasons to Transform Your Business Through Delegation

“Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.”

Sheryl Sandberg

Delegation is one of the most important skills to master if you want your business to grow. Yet, it can be one of the most difficult to develop – especially if you’ve built your business from the ground up. You might feel reluctant to trust other people with important responsibilities, or feel that it would take longer to explain the task to someone else than it would to do it yourself. While these concerns might be valid, the benefits of effective delegation far outweigh any initial teething problems.

Here are our top four reasons why you should learn to delegate:

1. Freeing up your time

If you want to focus on growing your business, you need to spend time on ‘big picture’ processes like your vision and strategic plan. There’s simply no way you can do this effectively while maintaining the same day-to-day tasks you carried out when you started your business. Passing these items to other members of the team will allow you to spend less time looking at the trees and more time seeing the forest.

2. Developing as a manager

Delegation undoubtedly comes with challenges. How do you explain the complex processes you know so well? How do you trust your team to carry them out to the same standard? How do you deal with situations where someone hasn’t carried out a task as well as you hoped? These situations are all challenges that every successful manager has had to face at some point in their career. Avoiding them will not only mean that your workload will continue to increase, but it will also stop you from developing the problem-solving and communication skills that will make you stand out as a fantastic leader and successful businessperson.

3. Upskilling your team

Simply put, if you don’t allow members of your team to take on additional responsibilities, they will never develop the skills they need to progress and help you bring your business to the next level. It is inevitable that people will make mistakes as they learn new things. However, it is far better for mistakes to be made while making progress than for people to stagnate or leave due to a lack of progression. As difficult as it can be to let go, it’s an essential step to creating a team and business that thrives.

4. Improving your relationships

Delegating tasks shows trust – an all-important factor in employee satisfaction and engagement. Passing responsibilities to members of your team is one of the easiest ways to show your confidence in their abilities and their future with the business. People leave jobs when they feel stuck with nowhere to progress. Allowing yourself to delegate demonstrates the possibility of moving on to new things and lets you see how candidates for promotion handle more responsibility.
